Travel buddies you can’t do without!

Imagine this: for years, you have been planning that once in a lifetime trip to Norway to witness the supremely magnificent Aurora Borealis. You brave the Arctic wind chills for long hours and you are finally there, all excited to capture the long-anticipated Northern Lights, and just before you are able to get your best shot, your camera battery goes dead. Or imagine going to the US to attend your daughter’s graduation ceremony and instead of feeling fresh and energetic, you feel drained and jetlagged because you couldn’t sleep a wink during the flight.

Travel enthusiasts all around the world swear that it is the ‘little things’ that can go a long way in ruining your trip. These are lack of sleep, drained batteries, stomach bugs,  infections due to unhygienic restrooms, misplaced travel documents and luggage issues, to name a few.

Here are five simple travel hacks from Bengaluru Duty Free to make you a smart traveller.

Everyone knows Tom Hanks’ famous observation from Forrest Gump: ‘Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get’. Few things in this world can transport you to a place of sheer happiness as the sensation of delicious chocolate melting in your mouth. Chocolate is perfect for a hot day, a cold day, a rainy day, a boring day and any other day in between! People across all ages, genders, sexes, nationalities, ethnicities and other distinctions are united by their love for chocolate.

Being a chocoholic and an international traveller is an amazing combination. It means binging on chocolates of all flavours and textures from around the world. Around three months ago, I was waiting at the Departures lounge of the Kempegowda International Airport and decided to kill time by taking a stroll through the Bengaluru Duty Free store there. And was I in for a treat!

The Bengaluru Duty Free store has over 200 different varieties of chocolates from the most well known brands – under one roof! These scrumptious delicacies include Lindt, Guylian, Goldkenn. What more could a chocoholic like me ask for… I was in chocolate heaven! Since that time, I’ve made sure to visit Bengaluru Duty Free whenever I’m at the airport and try out chocolates I’d never get at retail stores, at ridiculously attractive prices.

Here are a few examples:

Frey

Featured gadget of the month: Nikon D7000

Nikon_D7000_513

As a photography buff, you look forward to making every photo stand out as a work of art. This depends on both your skill in identifying the best angles, light conditions, elevation, etc., as well as on your mastery of the features of your camera. Today’s DSLR cameras come with a variety of settings that enable you to take stunning pictures in almost any light and weather conditions and change the look, feel and tone of the photo using only the camera’s image editing features. The market today is flooded with many high quality DSLR cameras, making it difficult to choose a clear winner.

In this scenario, Bengaluru Duty Free brings to your attention the Nikon D7000.

A budding photographer’s camera, the D7000 packs the punch of a 16.2 megapixel sensor combined with an Expeed 2 processor, and capable of handling an ISO range of 100 – 25,600, churning out premium quality images under all light conditions at 6 frames per second. Let’s take closer look at this elegant gadget’s standout features.

Image quality

Whether you choose the standard, vivid, neutral or monochrome colour palette option, your photo will have a high colour fidelity. The 16.2 megapixel sensor products prints with dimensions of 16.43 inches by 10.88 inches at 300 dots per inch (dpi); in other words, even with aggressive cropping, picture quality doesn’t get noticeably affected. Another great factor is note is the quality consistency at increasing ISO values. Whether you’re snapping a photo at ISO 100 or 200 or 400 or 800, the increase in graininess is not very apparent. And a great feature of the D7000 is its double SD card slots, so the backup card automatically starts getting used when the primary card gets full. The camera even allows you to store photos in RAW format on one card and JPEG on the other by selecting the ‘RAW primary, JPEG secondary’ option.

Video quality

Whether you’re recording weddings or wildlife, the D7000 proves a handy video recorder. At 24 fps, you can record video in 1920 x 1080p in normal or high quality, at 24 or 30 fps, you can record video at 1280 x 720p, and even 640 x 424p video can be shot at 30 fps. A recommended setting for recorded video would be 120 x 720p at 30 fps, set to high quality. Any wind noise issue that can affect audio quality during recording can be combated by going for an external microphone instead of relying on the built-in one.

Performance

This is a camera that is ready to ‘point and shoot’. Just put on the power button, and the camera automatically focuses and takes the first shot as quickly as your finger presses down on the shutter release. Nikon claims a 0.13 second start-up time and 50 millisecond shutter response for the D7000. Single-shot times are very fast; the camera instantaneously reqcuires focus and is ready to shoot again, as quickly as within 0.45 seconds. Continuous shooting rates at 6 fps allows the camera to take up to 100 pictures once you keep the shutter button depressed. The battery is strong enough to last for up to 1,050 shots.

So, there it is, in a nutshell: the Nikon D7000 is a premium quality camera that fully justifies its price tag. At Bengaluru Duty Free, you can purchase this value-for-money gadget with AF-S 18-105mm VR Kit Lens at the incredibly attractive price of $965 (approx. Rs. 60,988), a neat 6% less than the official retail price of Rs. 64,950. So all you shutterbugs, don’t miss this opportunity to own a fantastic camera that can be your loyal companion in your photographic journey. Visit the Sound & Vision – Arrivals store of Bengaluru Duty Free to purchase the D7000 today. View other offers on electronics gadgets at http://www.bengalurudutyfree.in/Offers.aspx.

The psychology of an airport shopper

header image

When you think about airports in the most basic sense, it is a port that allows you to board planes for travel from one destination to another. But over the years, airports have become much more than that. They have transformed into a tourist destination in themselves and act as a recreational centre in many ways based on the long list of amenities they provide. One such revolutionary recreational activity that airports have created is duty free shopping.

Every day, thousands of travellers in airports all over the world engage in airport shopping. Yes that’s right, shopping at airports has almost become a norm when it comes to travelling. Why has airport shopping become such a phenomenon? Well, there are psychological reasons behind it. Read ahead to find out.

Break free from monotony

 break from monotony

One of the main reasons for shopping while travelling is to gain a break from the monotony of normal day-to-day sights. Shopping activities that are exaggerated in terms of themes, designs, look, feel and location act as a good source of change. Engaging in the shopping process in lavish and visually appealing airport duty free shops acts as an experience by itself for many people.

Price. Convenience. Assortment. Quality. Service.

high quality duty free products

Airport duty free shops offer shoppers the benefit of great prices, a wide variety of products, trusted quality brands and the general convenience of everything being at one place. With such positives, there is no surprise that thousands of travellers are attracted to the aura of an airport shop. Another important plus point is the service provided by the staff at these shops. They are highly professional, efficient, multilingual, friendly and quick in processes, which makes the whole shopping experience very comfortable and stress-free for travellers.

Social motivations

duty free store staff

Airport shopping satisfies the need to meet and interact with new people, develop a sense of comfort in new places and generally get acquainted with people who share similar interests. Additionally, travellers also get to interact with the salespeople who make an effort to ensure the comfort of all travellers, giving one the feeling that they are in familiar and relaxing surroundings.

Self-expression

airport shopper

Some travellers use airport shopping as a way to express themselves to people around them. The kind of shops one enters and the things they buy becomes a symbol of how they would like the world to perceive them. Airport shopping becomes a mode of self-representation that helps travellers project their personalities to other travellers. Many a times, the shopping experience is simply used by people to fit into the modern and attractive commercial way of life.

Travel experience

foreign currency

Travel itself is a major factor that motivates airport shopping, as being in a new place incites tourists to purchase something that represents that place, such as souvenirs. In other cases, travellers usually end up having a lot of time between flights, which leads them to do something to distract themselves from a sense of monotony or boredom. Using the last of their foreign currency before leaving the airport is also a motivator for travellers when it comes to airport shopping. Yet another major factor is gifting, and duty free shops have excellent options in every category from the best international brands. Loved ones eagerly look forward to the returning international traveller, with his/her arms laden with gifts, and the airport is a perfect place to satisfy every whim.

Now you know some of the reasons that explain the worldwide craze for airport shopping. So the next time you find yourself waiting at the Arrivals/Departures lounge of the Kempegowda International Airport, Bangalore, don’t be surprised if you find yourself automatically walking towards Bengaluru Duty Free, looking forward to an enjoyable shopping experience. Make your duty free shopping a comfortable and leisurely experience by visiting Bengaluru Duty Free’s website, http://www.bengalurudutyfree.in and browsing our extensive collection of liquors, chocolates, perfumes, cosmetics, and travel and fashion accessories and pre-ordering your favourites. You can collect your purchases conveniently at the Arrivals/Departures lounge of the Kempegowda International Airport. Happy shopping!
